Preston, YES Prep Bassist

“I started playing bass when I came to YES Prep West in the sixth grade, and that was my first real introduction to the world of classical music through my teacher, Mr. Martin. He has challenged me to be a better bassist, and a better musician. My experience and training with Mercury has enabled me to play in the Houston Youth Symphony and in the high school symphony region.”

Preston and his classmates participate in Mercury's YES Prep Residency under the direction of Mercury education manager Andrés González and YES Prep orchestra director Tim Maynard. Students take private lessons with Mercury musicians and work with them daily in their orchestra classes at YES Prep West.  Along with working on their playing technique, Mercury musicians help the students learn important life skills, like collaboration, leadership, and personal responsibility.  These skills spill over into other areas of the students’ lives, and make a profound impact.

“Mercury has given me a tremendous amount of help and guidance. Without them, I wouldn't be the musician or the student I am today. Now my whole life is centered around music.  Music has given me opportunities to make new friends, find my passion, and create experiences that I never imagined.”

Music is a powerful force and Preston’s story is a great example of the way it enriches a young person’s life. You can help Mercury continue to bring music to Houston students with your gift today.   Please consider making a gift to help us towards our $30,000 goal.
