PRE-CONCERT LECTURE

7:15pm in the Green Room, this evening's lecture provided by Dr. Alexandra Kieffer of the Shepherd School of Music.

An opening night gem!

Hyped as the heir apparent to Beethoven, expectations wore heavy on Brahms as he wrote his First Symphony.  What resulted was an incredibly dramatic work filled with lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and a victorious hymn-like finale.  This work is paired with Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto – a virtuosic masterpiece.

Experience Mercury’s unique take on these masterpieces in their opening night performance.

This concert is made possible in part by the Houston Endowment and the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

Beneath the breath-taking beauty of the surface of Brahms’ music, lies an overwhelming wealth of motivic detail, thematic connections and transformations, and now, sophisticated tonal patterns.
